About John, the history behind Towcam...

With a professional career in Australian motorsport spanning over 30 years as a driver and later team owner, John Faulkner has engineered and built most of his own racing cars, from driving factory team supported sprint karts to in house built current spec v8 supercars. Under the team name JFR, john faulkner racing evolved from Karts, Group A Toyota's, Nascar and Australia's premier category V8 Supercars.

While gaining national and international sponsorships some new to motorsport JFR always strived to lead technology and innovative performance challenges.
Within JFR, the in house machining center, engine/chassis dyno, engine shop, fabrication and engineering departments regularly punched above their weight, with John winning rookie and top privateer status, Adding factory support from GM (Holden) thrust JFR into the elite level of motorsport in Australia.

John's other passion was game and sports fishing, with occasional breaks between championships John would disappear, chartering game boats around the world to tag and release those elusive marlin. While charter fishing in Hawaii the boats skipper bought out and towed underwater this huge black/white underwater camera, while glued to the TV John saw his first blue marlin stalk the deep towed bait, crashing it several times, he was HOOKED !

With the demands of driving race cars and running a team there was little thought given to developing and using his engineering skill's to make his own Ultra light, small, Hi Res towed color underwater camera that was until John became the owner of a 44' custom game boat. With long hot days spent trolling for marlin off the east coast of Australia John needed a little more excitement.

The first proto type TOWCAM was ready in 2003, the very first time it was deployed while feeding it back to our lures one of the crew was watching the TV screen in the saloon, with a large mouthful of watermelon spraying over the teak cockpit he yelled MARLIN ! MARLIN! There's a marlin on the camera. All eyes searched the spread, nothing! we hadn't set the recording button either, so we had to listen to him all day about this marlin we missed

The fish was getting bigger each time he reminded us. (True story)


Five years on, Two Queensland GCGFC championship top marlin boat awards and two outright tournament wins, all the while testing and developing Towcam units at sea. Utilizing a race car component Rapid prototype profiling machine to achieve low surface pressure and dive range along with gravity center.

We unveiled TOWCAM at the biggest boat show of the year Sanctuary Cove, towcam was not on sale but the valuable feedback highlighted the demand out there with not only the seasoned pro charter and gameboat skippers but the smaller sportfish boats wanting quality vision as well.

Showing easily captured and unrivaled stunning color underwater strike vision from our boat Five Star, Castille, and Too Easy, using Towcam and Pole cam's vision exclusively, our display stand was assured of a crowd. Proudly John was there showing off his product explaining how good a bait & switch tool he had and signing the odd autograph for those that recognized the veteran race car driver.
